How a home solar power system works (IELTS Writing Task 1 process)How a home solar power system works. Sunlight falls on solar panels on the roof, which produce DC (direct current) electricity. This goes to an inverter, which changes it into AC (alternating current) electricity. Spare DC electricity can be stored in a battery for later use. From the inverter, AC electricity goes to the consumer unit, which sends it to appliances such as lights, a fridge and a television. A meter connects the house to the national grid: when the panels produce more electricity than the home needs, it is sold to the grid, and when they produce too little, electricity is bought from the grid.
