Electricity from a hydroelectric plant (IELTS Writing Task 1 process)How electricity is produced at a pumped-storage hydroelectric plant. Rain and melting snow from the mountains fill a reservoir held back by a dam. Water enters through an intake gate near the bottom of the dam and flows down a pipe to the power station, where it turns a turbine. The turbine drives a generator that produces electricity. A transformer passes the electricity to power lines, which carry it to homes. After passing the turbine, the water flows out into a river. At night, water is pumped back up from the plant to the reservoir so that it can be used again.
